We do need your help. Since the inception of this museum, the Founder, Rev. James A. Benson, has had to use his own resources with the assistance of volunteers to meet the needs of our community and fulfill the mission to share this history and information with others. With the exception of occasional donors, we do not receive funding from any other entity to run the museum. There is not a museum in this area like The Benson Museum.
One of the goals of The Benson Museum has been to share the way Lawnside and the surrounding communities "used to be". This is accomplished by displaying our many photos and antiques and by the stories told of the founding families of Lawnside depicted throughout the museum. However, if the doors of this museum are closed and the lights are off due to lack of funding we can no longer share all that Rev. Benson has created to educate and inspire the children and adults alike.
Baron Hilliard - Journey Thru Black America... Day 16." I was absolutely blown away by the Benson History Museum. You've probably never heard of it, but its amazing. Rev. James A Benson has archived and collected so many historical documents, stories and artifacts. I could spend a week there easily! "
We thank you for any donation that you can give to help us continue to share each day the information that is gathered so uniquely in this museum. We hope you will tell your family,co-workers, friends and classmates.
Help us spread the word that
HISTORY LIVES AT THE BENSON MUSEUM!
If you would like to have your family highlighted in our "Miles of Memory Lane" series please call the museum and leave a message for Mrs. King indicating that you would like to share your family history with the community.
The series began on April 30, 2011 and Mr. Franklin "Buster" Harper was our first honoree and he spoke about the history of The Lawnside Fire Dept. Mrs. Ellen Benson also spoke that day about the Lawnside Post Office and its many locations and the creation of our delivery service. We had a fun time with trivia as we strolled down Lawnside's Memory Lane. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves!
Our Annual Juneteenth Celebration will be Saturday, June 18th from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM on the grounds of The Benson Museum. We hope you will join us as we celebrate the day that is considered to be the day the last slaves in America were freed, June 19, 1865. This is a free event with vendors, exhibits, great food, great fun for all ages, steppers, book signings, music, tours of the museum, horseshoe tournaments, and town trivia, etc. LOTS OF FUN FOR EVERYONE!! All we need is for you to come out and join us!
