EVENTS AND INFORMATION
Saturday, August 26, 2017 will be our Annual Juneteenth Celebration. It will be held at the Lawnside Public School, 426 E. Charleston Ave. Lawnside, NJ once again. Each year we have a celebration filled with diverse entertainment, great food, vendors gospel music, R&B and smooth jazz! There will also be a re-enactment of the moment when Gen. Granger told the slaves in Galveston, Texas that they were free! Save the date and plan to join us this year. Vendors applications are available.
One of the goals of The Benson Museum has been to share the way Lawnside and the surrounding communities "used to be". This is accomplished by displaying our many photos and antiques and by telling the stories of the founding families of Lawnside depicted throughout the museum. However, if the doors of this museum are closed and the lights are off due to lack of funding we can no longer share all that Rev. Benson has created to educate and inspire the children and adults alike. This would truly be a lost opportunity to help what seems to be an "at risk" generation. We need to do everything we can to instill hope and enlighten and empower our young people. Where there is a feeling of "connection" to a community there is less likelihood of vandalism in your neighborhoods. When you bolster someones pride in who they are and where they have come from they in turn are able to pass that same positive feeling along to someone else. When we tell the stories of the men and women that have made up the fabric of this great borough and beyond, we aim to empower our visitors by inspiring them to do great and even greater things with their lives. If our forefathers were able to do the amazing things that they did with so little, can you imagine what can be accomplished today with all that we have at our disposal... We must continue to tell the stories so the young people will know whose shoulders they are standing on....

The Benson History Museum works with The Lawnside Historical Society to promote the Peter Mott House and the exciting story of Lawnside, New Jersey. We recommend a visit to this historical site. Please visit their website for more information.
Revisit history at the Peter Mott House, a station along the Underground Railroad, in the historically African-American town of Lawnside, N.J.
The Peter Mott House is the oldest known house in Lawnside. Built circa 1845, the house was residence to Peter Mott, an African-American preacher who was the first Sunday school superintendent at Mount Pisgah African Methodist Episcopal Church in Lawnside, and his wife, Eliza.
No birth certificates survive, but census records indicate that Mott was born around 1810. The 1850 Census lists Mott, 40, as a black male laborer owning real estate valued at $600. His wife, Elizabeth Ann Mott, was listed as 42. Gloucester County marriage records show that he married Eliza Thomas on Nov. 2, 1833.
